Vets Club Successes at the British Open. Liverpool 2008

This, or is it next, season’s British Open was held between May 8th and 12th at the Northern Club Crosby and the Liverpool Cricket Club. With some of the “younger” age group finals being played on the all glass court at the ECO Arena.

There was success for club members at almost all levels.

In the senior ladies Maggie North overcame Bett Dryhurst

In the O’50 ladies Karen Hume lost to Jackie Gardiner

Mandy Akin bt Heather Tweedle in the 45’s

In the Men’s events the winners were Mark Woodliffe 45’s

Ian Bradburn 50’s – Philip Ayton 60’s – Mike Clemson 65’s – Pat Kirton 70’s

Runners up were Alan Thomson – Adrian Wright – John Woodliffe

Also a number of members reached semi-final places.

The usual fun was had by those whose progress was ended early, and support given to those who progressed further. Although the viewing space at the LCC was restricted apart from the one glass back, the crowds of spectators enjoyed many closely contested matches.

I know that a number of membership forms were given out during the course of the tournament. Hopefully this will lead to a few new members.

The only down side was that all the finals were on the Monday which meant that many of us with other commitments had to return home and miss some great games.

Ah well! Back to Manchester next time.
